I have watched with amazement as the world has watched this election. Why, I wondered, does the world seem to be waiting with bated breath for the outcome of a presidential election in a country not their own? Is it because Bush has been so detrimental to the world as a whole?

Partially.

However, I was astounded by the seemingly prevalent reason for interest: hope.

Astonishingly enough, it seems that what I thought to be drivel from my parents and teachers about the ‘American Dream’ is true. The world is fascinated by a country that touts giving power to the people. The world is in love with the notion of freedom, liberty, opportunity, and justice for all. The world is open to the idea of democracy, when they receive proof that it can work, and work in a big way.

The problem has been that we didn’t believe it. We have allowed our apathy, our cynicism, and our forgetfulness to diminish this dream for ourselves and the rest of the world. This week, we revived the dream.

Too long we have been steeped in our patriotic arrogance, rather than remembering our patriotic ideals. Let us remember those ideals in this victory of the people. Let us remember the reason this country became great in the first place.

We are not the presumed leaders of the free world because of military might. We are not harbingers of democracy just because we pay lip service to it. We must lead by example. We must stand for the peace and freedoms of people everywhere if we expect to continue to be the beacon of hope to the world.

Give me your tired, your poor,

Be proud all you want. Be patriotic all you want. Just be sure to remember the reason for the pride and patriotism. To accept the position of leaders of the free world, we cannot afford to forget the responsibility that goes with it.

And to the rest of the world: Thank you for your renewed faith. This week was not just about electing a person of color to a position of power. It was not just about saying no to a regime of fear and hatred. It was about an awakening of the citizenry who decided to finally work together once again, and found their own power in doing so. What you have seen this week is an exercise of the very freedom offered by a society which places emphasis upon an empowered people. This is not just an American ideal, but a world ideal. You have heard our mantra this election season, ‘Yes we can!’ You have seen the outcome. You have watched as we have once again entered the path to personal freedom and responsibility, and I hope you are also listening as we send you the following message, “You can, too!”

Dear Shirley Nagel,

I recently viewed the news clip in which you are interviewed for not giving Halloween candy to children of Obama supporters. In light of that interview, I must say that you are an unmitigated pig.

Shirley Nagel, Michigan Delegate and all-around mean person.

When told that you are making small chidren cry, you reply, “Oh well”. Congratulations. You have just demonstrated that you should not be allowed around small children, ever.

I do hope that you don’t affiliate yourself with the Christian right, because, if so, you’d have to be the most sorry example of Christianity I have ever had the misfortune to lay eyes on. Christianity does not teach selfishness. It does not teach cruelty to innocent children. It does not teach you to make an ass of yourself at every opportunity. Shame on you.

Why the hell would you hold children to a political affiliation? Are you that petty? Wait–don’t answer. You have already demonstrated that, indeed, you are.

Perhaps, in that tiny, shriveled-by-meanness  brain you have, you do not realize exactly what you have done. You have, in fact, guaranteed that quite a few children now associate your chosen candidates, and most likely your chosen party, with evil, nasty, vile behavior. You have guaranteed that they will carry this association into their adulthood. You have suceeded in eventually increasing the ranks of those that oppose people like you, and with your views/associations, foolish creature that you are. Ruminate on that for awhile, if you will.

And in the meantime, consider trying to become a decent human being.

Yes, I'm proud of my button.

I spent most of the day phone banking for the local Get Out the Vote Campaign in my neighborhood. It was

My husband, taking a water break from the stresses of talking to strangers on the phone. XD

a small group manning the phones at a local supporter’s home. The larger group of volunteers went door to door to canvass the neighborhood and make sure that anyone that needed a ride to the polls could get one. My husband and I chose phone banking, instead, because we ride motorcycles, and it’s kind of a pain to be taking the helmets off constantly and putting them back on. (Besides, it was cold, so I was all for opting to stay inside with the coffee and muffins. XD)

I had a few trepidations at first. I’m not really a ‘phone person’. I text, I email, but I hate talking to people that I can’t see. However, it wasn’t bad at all. In fact, after the first few calls, it was actually a lot of fun. I personally called over a hundred people, and 99% of them were very nice, very friendly. I got hung up on once, and a rude response once, but other than that it was great. Quite a few people actually

seemed to appreciate the information we were giving out, as where to go and what to bring to the polls can seem rather confusing, and we managed to garner some new volunteers for the coming few days before the election. I also ended up calling a few people that had already voted for Obama the day before, and that was really nice. With those calls in particular, there was a feeling of comaraderie, even of jubilation.

It was really great connecting with those people, and it was great getting to know the other volunteers. A breath of fresh air, really, to be able to be around a group of people that you know won’t automatically go into berate mode when they hear who you are voting for.

Unfortunately, we had to leave to get my son to work after a few hours, but I’m looking forward to going back to help on election day. After seeing the overall positive response we got, and the value of helping people that actually needed assistance with information and rides to the polls, I wouldn’t want to miss it for the world.

If nothing else, make sure to remind people to vote. We can’t get too complacent simply because the polls seem to be in our favor. If the remaining Obama supporters sit at home because they think the election is already in the bag, we just might wake up on Wednesday morning to find out that our country is going to be run by John McCain and Crazy Palin. Get out and vote, and get out the vote. We can win this, we just need to make sure that we all do our part.

However, in recent times (and other darker areas of our history) exercising such rights can get us labeled as being anti-American by certain groups of people in this country. Do it anyway. Do it because our constitution is considered to be one of the greatest in the world for a reason. Do it because it is not only a fundamental right, but a fundamental responsibility. Do it because our ancestors did it, and many of them died so that their children and grandchildren would have these rights throughout eternity. Do it because citizens remaining silent have led to the downfall of many otherwise honorable nations. Do it because there is nothing more American than policing our leaders.

Protect our constitution. Speak out for what you believe in. Protest unjust laws and corrupt officials. Take a direct approach to preserving the fundamental freedoms of this country. Show no intimidation. Just do it, and don’t let hysterical cries of “Anti-American” sway you.
